Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation Review

This Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation is amazing. It’s an oil-free, vegan, matte full coverage liquid foundation. There are 40 shades to choose from- which is unbelievable. It is 1.7 Fl. Oz. or 50 mL, which is .7 Fl. Oz. more than most foundations. It usually runs about $39. Keep reading to find out more about this foundation.

If you have read my other makeup routines, you know that I love the Revlon Colorstay foundation. So I am used to a liquid and fuller-coverage than most drugstore foundation. But I am always on the lookout for the PERFECT foundation. Is this Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation it?

WHAT IT DOES

• Instant full coverage

• Matte finish & oil control (to an extent)

• Cake free & comfortable formula

• Amazonian clay helps balance your complexion

Revlon vs. Tarte

I have some acne and acne scarring, so I love anything full coverage. Before, with the Revlon Colorstay, I felt like I was putting on so many layers of concealer and powder. But I thought that was just how to achieve a flawless look with acne. Wrong. So wrong.

This foundation is thicker, more like a cream. Now all I wear is moisturizer (this stuff is amazing +SPF), Tarte foundation, concealer, and my fave RCMA no-color powder. Read my full makeup routine here. Before I bought this I was all about green concealer to cover redness. Then I realized: why not get a fuller coverage foundation and skip the extra step? Ha! I love having such a simple makeup routine now.

Does it cover? Oh yes. Of course, the Revlon foundation did an excellent job in covering, but it always needed more. I still use concealer, but if you are just covering freckles or redness, you probably won’t need concealer but maybe under your eyes.

I would still recommend the Revlon Colorstay, just because it is such great foundation. Revlon Colorstay is on sale HERE! (FYI: Revlon Colorstay is definitely the dupe for Makeup Forever Ultra HD foundation! Don’t waste your money on Makeup Forever, it’s the same formula!) If you have flawless and perfect skin, I definitely think you’ll love the Revlon. (Buff is my favorite color for very light olive tone skin.) But, for me with acne problems, the Tarte is better coverage. I wear the color Fair Sand. (Pink tones? No thanks. Only yellow undertones for me!) If you think Light Sand will work for you, it’s on sale HERE!

HOW TO USE

• Dispense a dime size amount of foundation on your foundation brush or sponge

• Sweep onto skin starting at the center of the face and blending outward

Foundation Brush or Sponge?

I have always used a wet sponge to apply my makeup and I still recommend it, especially for Revlon Colorstay foundation. But for my new Tarte foundation, I like a foundation brush. The key to know if you should be using a sponge or brush depends on your foundation formula. Try both to see which one you like better. If you are using a flat foundation brush, make sure you crisscross your foundation. This is important so you don’t have foundation lines. Here you get a 12 piece Morphe brush set and case for only $25 (a STEAL!). The flat foundation brush I use is included in this set.

Does it last all day?

Well. Yes and no. This is one reason why I’m still looking for the best foundation. I have oily skin, and so it’s hard to find makeup that fixes that. (If you have found something that you love for oily skin, let everyone know- comment below!) By about 1 or 2 in the afternoon I find myself blotting my face and adding a little powder. So, yes, it lasts if you touch it up once throughout the day. I also use the Urban Decay Oil Control Setting Spray. I love it, but at the same time I can’t really tell a difference with or without it. I’ll be buying the Urban Decay All-Nighter next. (Do you love the All-Nighter Setting Spray?)

My holy grail foundation for my oily skin happens to be Estée Lauder Double Wear. I recently tried a drugstore foundation, Maybelline Super Stay, it seems to work really well with super oily skin. Made me really dry at first, but as my oils mixed it looked very nice. I am giving this foundation a try again after years of not using it.

Hello! I’m planning to order the Tarte amazonian clay foundation and just wondering what your Mac shade is? I’m confused between fair sand and light sand. I’m NC25 on Mac and Y245 on MUFE Reboot. I have light olive skin but I’ve also read that it oxidises so maybe fair sand works better. The samples I tried came with fair beige (looks light) and light neutral (looks dark). I guess it’s hard to tell from those samples as they don’t match my undertone. Great post by the way! I’ve also tried Revlon colorstay (dry) but I have the wrong shade (220). I liked the formula though and how it performed on my combo dry skin.

      Hey Lah!
So I’ve changed up my makeup routine since I wrote this. And I absolutely love what I’m doing now. I just use some concealer, the Revlon Colorstay Combo 150 Buff with a wet sponge, then setting spray. I don’t think I’ve ever tried Mac foundation, but I tried 4 different colors on the Tarte and I finally found Fair Sand. The light sand had a little too much pink in it.
Let me know how it goes!

Just wanted to suggest a foundation for oily skin that works even better than the Tarte Amazonian Clay! I’ve been using this for a long time now and I never find a foundation I like more. And I have difficult skin! A lot of products don’t work for me. My all time favorite foundation is the L.A. Girl Pro Matte concealer. It’s truly lightweight but also full coverage! Love it and it’s cheap too!
