What is an eBay Store?

Many new eBay sellers wonder if you have to own an eBay store to be able to sell. The simple answer is no, you don’t need a store to sell on eBay. In fact, you shouldn’t buy a store until you have at least 100 items for sale. The point of a store is to help sellers who have many items for sale with lower fees, free listings, inventory organization, vacation settings, custom store front, and more

When to Open an eBay Store

So when is an eBay store right for you? Three aspects go into buying a store:

#1 How many items you list each month

#2 How much you are spending in insertion fees

#3 How much you are going to continue to have listed

The main benefit of owning an eBay store is getting free listings. Look at your eBay invoice to find out how much your spending on listings. This is the first step to find out if you should buy a store. Find out how much you are paying in insertion fees by going to: eBay.com > my eBay > account > invoices

Which Store is Best for You?

Check out your last couple invoices. If you have been spending more than $22 in insertion fees (not final value fees), you should buy the basic store. If you spend more than $60 in insertion fees, you should definitely get the Premium store.

You need to make sure your subscription fees are less than your insertion fees.

The Starter eBay store just got released a couple months ago. It costs $4.95 a month if you buy the yearly subscription. (I recommend buying the yearly subscription on any plan. You save money and you get billed monthly either way.) This would be a good store for you if you consistently have 125 or more items for sale each month (or you are spending more than $5 in insertion fees).

Break Down of the Stores:

What are the Benefits of Opening an eBay Store?

An eBay store not only gives you discounted fees and more free listings per month, you also get access to additional tools to manage and promote your business.

Basic Store: 500 free listings (250 Fixed Price / 250 Auction) | $100 a year in shipping supply coupons

Premium Store: 1,500 free listings (1,000 Fixed Price / 500 Auction) | $200 a year in shipping supply coupons

The quarterly coupon for the eBay branded shipping supplies is amazing. This is such a nice perk for owning a store. (The Starter Store doesn’t include a coupon.) Each quarter you get a coupon for shipping supplies that say eBay!

Also you can put many different kinds of sales on your items with a store. (Even the Starter!) There is also a vacation mode for when you go out of town.

If you are treating eBay like a true business, buy a store. If it’s just a side hobby to earn an extra couple bucks and get rid of things, I wouldn’t buy one just yet until you get at least 150 listings.
