EBAY SELLING TIPS

How to Write a Description on eBay

So you have started selling on eBay. Are you making bank yet? I’m sure you are because you read how to here. Now you are wondering how to write that perfect description. In this article you will find why a good description is so important and ideas on what to write. You will be a pro eBay description writer in no time!

Why Descriptions are Important

When buyers are searching for something on eBay, the description of each item usually makes or breaks the sale. Having an honest, detailed, and fun description will up your sales. This is where buyers can find out more information about the item and you as a seller. Does the item come from a non-smoking home? Do you own pets? How fast are you going to ship the item? Do you accept returns? Don’t forget to tell them to check out your other items for sale.

Copy & Paste

I recommend making a sample description. Save it in your notes on your iPad, phone, or computer. Then when you list something, just copy and paste it to the description. Then change and add information as needed. My template is ready to where I only need to add the brand name, size, measurements, material, and any additional information.

Simple & Easy to Read

Buyers won’t read your description if it’s really long and in one massive paragraph. Use bullet points and short sentences. Buyers decide if they want to buy your item in a matter of seconds and your description will sell it or not.

Always Measure & Add All Details

Adding measurements to your description takes about two minutes. On listings that I’m lazy and I skip the measurements, three buyers will send me a message on eBay asking for the measurements for that item. Then it takes me ten minutes to get the item, measure it, answer the question, and put it away. Times three. So, I have found it’s worth it to just spend the couple minutes and add the measurements. Adding all details and flaws are very important. One reason is because buyers will trust you more as a seller if you add the tiniest details or flaws. Another reason is because if you forget to add a flaw, you will just be getting a return request. (and those are never fun.)

About the Item Details

When you are listing an item, there is a box titled, “Item Details”. You can choose from a list on lots of extra details. For example, this White House Black Market I had for sale at one point has information about the sleeve length, occasion, neckline, material, style, pattern, and more. This is important because when buyers are shopping for something specific, they refine all those options. So if you skip adding the neckline style, your listing is now categorized under “Unknown”. And nobody is searching for an unknown neckline.

Summary

  • Short, simple sentences is key.
  • Use bullet points.
  • Don’t forget to answer questions that the buyer is wondering like: is your home pet-free? Do you smoke? Are returns accepted? What condition is the item in? Are there any flaws? What are the measurements? Does it fit true to size?
  • Always measure.
  • Add as many details as possible in the Item Details box.
  • Type up a good template for your description and keep it on your tablet or phone.

Final Encouragement

Don’t invest too much on each item, because you make money at the buy. List items just a little more than what you would even pay. Keep your inventory organized as you list. Ship items that sell every night. Keep your shipping cost low, this is how you make more. Retake your pictures if your items are selling. One thing to remember: if you don’t list, you don’t last. The more you list on eBay = the more you sell = the more you make. So don’t give up! Keep listing because eBay works.
