If you are needing some extra money, have you thought about selling on eBay? It’s so fast and easy to make money and get rid of stuff instantly. When you sell something, the money gets sent to your PayPal account instantly then you can transfer it to your bank account for free. Are you wonder what you can sell on eBay around your house? Continue reading to find out. First, let’s learn how to start selling on eBay.

How to start selling

Are you new at selling on eBay? Many people say they are nervous to start selling online because of the fees and shipping. Selling on eBay is the lowest cost business you can start. It doesn’t cost anything until you start selling. ($0.35 to list each item (but you get 50 FREE listings each month!) + 10% eBay fees). Follow this 6 step how-to guide below to find out exactly how to sell your stuff for cash.

STEP ONE | The very first step to sell online is to open an eBay and PayPal account. Both eBay and PayPal accounts are both free to open. PayPal charges 2.9% + $0.30 per sale. You no longer need PayPal to sell on eBay, you can use your own bank account. I like using PayPal because it’s so easy and safe. Then as you get paid or at the end of the month, just transfer the funds to your bank account.

STEP TWO | Step two is to gather your items and do a little research on them to find out how much they’re worth. To do research, just get a pad of paper and pen. Make a list of every item you found around your house. Then research everything you have. To find out how to do research, check out this post: “eBay Pricing Strategy and How to do Research”. Write down the average selling price for your item that has sold recently.

STEP THREE | Next you need to take GOOD pictures. Pictures are key. Buy a white poster board or use a white fluffy rug with a plant. Professional pictures are preferred by eBay (a plain white background), but flat lays are really popular right now. There is a new update on the eBay app where you can white-out your background and it’s super easy. Definitely use that feature. You get 12 free pictures on eBay, so use them! Take multiple pictures of every detail. Pictures are what make the sale, so take good pictures!

STEP FOUR | It’s time to list an item. I definitely recommend downloading the eBay app on your phone or tablet and listing that way, but if you’re familiar with using the website that’s okay too. Have a description template written. (Find some description ideas here!) I save my description template in my notes on my iPad, then I copy and paste. In your description, you want your policies and item details. Be very descriptive and add any flaw your item has. When you add even minor flaws, the buyer trusts you as a seller more.

STEP FIVE | You did your research in step two. What is the average price selling for? When you have great pictures and a great description, you can set your set a little higher than the average selling price.

STEP SIX | When your item sells, it’s time to ship it. You definitely will want to buy shipping envelopes and order free boxes. It is very important to add something with each item that sells. It can be a short “thank you for your purchase” note, a “please shop again!” business card, or just the packing slip. It’s so easy to buy a shipping label and print it from the eBay app. Tape it on and take it up to the Post Office! You can also schedule a pick-up on usps.com and they will pick it up from your front door for free.

eBay encouragement

Don’t give up. Sometimes you will get upset because an angry buyer wants to return an item, or you may not make as much as you wanted on an item that sold. The more you sell, the more you figure out what works for you.

Just a few eBay tips:

  • Don’t invest too much on each item, because you make money at the buy.
  • List items just a little more than what they have been selling for. Then don’t be afraid to put a sale on them in a month.
  • Keep your inventory organized as you list. This is key to selling on eBay. Check it out: How to Organize your eBay Inventory
  • Ship items that sell during the day every night. Don’t put it off until the morning. Then set up a pick up on usps.com so you don’t have to leave your house. Check it out: How to Ship Items on eBay
  • Keep your shipping cost low, this is how you make more.
  • Retake your pictures and change up your title if your items are not selling. Check it out: How to Take Good Pictures

One thing to remember: if you don’t list, you don’t last. The more you list on eBay = the more you sell = the more you make. So don’t give up! Keep listing because eBay works.
