EBAY SELLING TIPS,  Make Money From Home

Can you Really Make Money on ThredUp?

Are you wanting to sell your clothes but have no time to list them? If you’re a reseller, I’m sure you’ve heard about ThredUp to make money. In this post you will find out if selling on ThredUp is worth it.

What is ThredUp?

ThredUp is an online consignment store where you can buy and sell gently-used clothing, shoes, handbags, accessories, and jewelry.

How do you sell on ThredUp?

  1. Go to ThredUp.com and click the Sell tab.

2. Click on Sell or Donate.

3. You can either choose donate your clothing or make money on them.

4. Choose Print a Label or Mail a Bag. I recommend choosing Print a Label because you can print it at home, put your clothes in any bag or box, and drop it off at the Post Office or FedEx place. If you choose Mail a Bag, it takes about 2 weeks for your bag to get to you and all it is a mailing bag with a label attached for you to put your clothes in. So you can send out your items the same day if you just print out the label yourself. Both ways are free to send your clothes.

5. This is where your profits can disappear. ThredUp only accepts an average of 40% of your items. They only accept perfect condition items. (Keep reading to find out what they accept and what you can get the most profit on.) You can have them recycle the items they don’t accept or you can have them sent back to you for $10.99.

6. One negative about selling on ThredUp is the wait time. It takes 3-6 months to have your items processed, plus another month or two for your items to sell. You can pay $16 to have your items processed in 3 weeks.

7. Then you print your label and send off your box!

What do they accept and not accept?

ThredUp accepts:

  • Clean, freshly washed items
  • Name brands (they accept 35,000 brands)
  • On-trend and less than five years old
  • Free of tears, stains, or rips
  • Excellent condition

They don’t accept anything with wear, older styles, or low-end brands.

If you are serious about making money off your clothes, you have to make sure they are in perfect condition. Cut any strings, make sure there’s no pilling or stains. (They even look on the inside of clothes!)

How to get the most amount of money

There are 3 tiers on ThredUp.

  1. With premium and designer brands, like J. Crew, Lululemon, and Gucci, you get up to 80% payout and 90 days for your item to sell.

2. With mid-priced brands, like Nike, Gap, and Zara, you get up to 60% payout and 60 days for your item to sell.

3. With low-priced brands, like H&M, Forever21, and Old Navy, they don’t always accept these lower-end brands but you can still try it and send them in. You will most likely make less than a dollar for these brands.

Pricing is determined by the brand, season style, and quality.

On average, for these items you will receive:

Lululemon Pants: $13

Lularoe Dress: $4

Nike Hoodie: $4

American Eagle Jeans: $3

Ann Taylor LOFT Shirt: $2

So to get the most amount, send in high-end designer brands in excellent condition that is in season.

How to resell on ThredUp

Many resellers say they make thousands of dollars a month on ThredUp. As a reseller, I’ve tried! It is not easy on ThredUp to make a lot of money. I’ve heard resellers say they bought a shirt at Goodwill for $5 and they’re going to make $60 profit on it on ThredUp… before you start going to thrift stores to find items to flip on ThredUp, test it out with a few of your items and see how it works.

You have to look for those brands that don’t sell on eBay for much, but fall in the designer brands on ThredUp. Sometimes it is worth it if you sell your items yourself and sometimes you will make more if you send it to ThredUp. For example, if I sent in a Free People dress and it sold for $40 on ThredUp, I’ll only make about $11. But if I sold it on eBay for $40, I’ll make at least $30.

Do research. I search my item on eBay for recently sold and see how much they’re going for. If it’s less than $10, I search ThredUp for that item. If similar items are only listed for $14.99 on ThredUp, you are only going to make $1.35. Might as well list it on eBay and make $7!

Here are quick ways you can lose your profit:

If you speed up the process and click process in 3 weeks, that takes $16 right out of your profit.

If you want your items that they don’t accept back, that takes $10.99 right out of your profit.

It doesn’t sound like much until they only accept 5 items worth $2 in profit!

Also, here’s something not very many people talk about. When your 60 or 90 days to consign is up, you either have to pay $6+ in shipping to get your items back to you or you donate them.

Shop on ThredUp

I definitely recommend shopping on ThredUp. You can find some really cheap clothes. If you sign up here, you can get $10 free to shop.

Summary

If you’re wanting to get the most amount of money from your clothes, sell it on eBay, Poshmark, or Mercari.

If you are getting rid of your clothes leftover from a garage sale or you don’t care how much you get from them, send them to ThredUp.
